Formulary
*Baytril
(enrofloxacin)
5-10 mg once or twice per
day. Orally or injectable.
4-6 cc/gallon of 10% solution.
Treat for 10 days. Use caution in rapidly growing young birds.
There are several other 'floxacins now. All are dosed the same.
*Amoxicillin
50mg per bird twice daily.
3000mg/gallon Use 12-250mg capsules or 6-500mg caps.
Treat for 10 days.
*Tylan (tylosin)
50 mg per bird daily orally or injectable.
1-2 tsp/gallon with a Cycline.
*LS 50 (lincosin / spectinomycin)
3/4 tsp/gallon
Treat for 7-10 days.
BMD (bacitracin)
1 tsp/gallon for 7-10 days. Is
not absorbed into the body from the intestine, so treatment is limited to
intestinal disease.
Neomycin
1 tsp/gallon for 5 days. Is
not absorbed into the body from the intestine, so treatment is limited to
intestinal disease.
CYCLINES
When using the cyclines it is recommended that grit and other calcium
sources be removed. One needs to use care with the type of water used as well.
If it turns brownish on mixing with tap water then the water has too much
calcium in it. One then needs to use distilled water.

Treat for at least 5 days.
COCCIDIA ONLY

4cc (100mg)/gal
Treat for 2 days only.
SULFAS
Treat for 5-10 days for bacterial
infections. 10 days for coccidia.
--Albon (sulfadimethoxin)
2TBS/gal of liquid.
1/2 tsp/gal of dry.
Better than other sulfas for
coccidia.
Treat for 5 days.
--Vetasulid (sulfachloropyrizidine)
1 tsp/gal.
Treat for 5 days.
--Sulmet (sulfamethazine)
2 TBS or 30 cc/gal.
Treat for 5 days.
--*Sulfa/Trimethoprim
This combination is more effective than the straight sulfas.
Pink Cherry Sulfa liquid - 4 TBS or
60 cc per gallon.
Trimeth/Sulfa powder - 1 tsp/gal.
Divet tabs - 1 tablet daily.
Treat for 5 days.
CANKER
MEDS

Treat for 5 days
--Emtril (dimetridazole)
1/4 -3/8 tsp/gal for 5 days.
Be careful of the dose. Use caution in hot weather. Too much will cause balance
problems, seizures and possibly death.
–Flagyl, Thone Tronid, Fishzole (metronidazole)
25-50 mg per bird per day for 3 days. May not mix well.
1250-2500 mg per gallon for 3-5 days.

WORMERS

20ml/gal of 2mg/ml sol’n.
Treat for 24-48 hrs.
Excellent wormer related to
Ivomec but not available in the US yet.
--Pyrantel pamoate
1-3 mg per bird.
75 mg/gal for 2 days. May settle out. Pick up the water for several hours prior
to feeding. Put mixed sol'n down at feeding so the birds will drink the proper
concentration. Not commonly used.
–Panacur, Safeguard (fenbendazole)
5mg/pigeon for 3 days.
Will cause damage to growing feathers. Not commonly used.
–Pipazine
Will only treat roundworms. Least
effective.
--Droncit (praziquantel)
5mg/bird. ¼ 23mg tablet
For tapeworms only.
Not commonly needed.
Quinacrine
200mg/gal for 1-4 weeks.
This will not eliminate
"malaria" Haemoproteus, but will reduce it significantly.
Nystatin
½ to 1ml orally.
Nolvasan 2%
Add 15cc or 1TBS/gal of drinking
water.
*Permethrin
Dust birds monthly or as needed.
Spray ½ % sol’n under wings
and on breast.
Seven 5% dust
Dust birds monthly or as needed.
*Malthion 57%
¼ cup/2gallons of water.
Use as a dip, but keep the head
out.
Copper sulfate
1-2 cc/gal of bath water.
